This survey, featuring insights from 1044 Indian students, provides a compelling narrative of the shifting aspirations of Gen Z in the post-Covid era.

Key Drivers: Work Opportunities and Education Quality

A significant one-third of the respondents are strategically selecting their study destinations based on post-study work opportunities and the perceived quality of education. This dual consideration reflects a conscious decision-making process among Indian students, aligning their educational pursuits with long-term career goals.

Preference for International Education

An intriguing revelation surfaces as 41% of Indian students express a preference for studying abroad, even when presented with the prospect of the same educational quality being offered by Indian universities. This underscores the allure of global exposure, hinting at the unparalleled experiences students seek beyond academic realms.

Motivations Behind the Move

Delving into the motivations, the survey highlights the top three drivers for Indian Gen Z students to study abroad:

  • Global Living Experience: The desire to live in another country, embracing diverse cultures.
  • Higher Quality Education: Recognition of superior educational standards abroad.
  • Enhanced Job Prospects: Anticipation of better career opportunities at home and overseas, fueled by an international degree.

Diverse Aspirations

While the majority envisions a life beyond borders, an intriguing 11% of Gen Z Indian students express a desire to acquire critical skills abroad and contribute to India’s advancement. This nuanced aspiration underscores a commitment to leveraging international exposure for the betterment of their home country.

Challenges Amidst Aspirations

Despite these ambitions, the pandemic has cast a shadow over the study abroad dreams of 8 out of 10 Indian students. The challenges cited include the perceived difficulty in travel (40%) and the heightened complexity of obtaining student visas for many study destinations (31%).

A Growing Trend

As per UNESCO data, India has witnessed a steady rise in students pursuing higher education abroad, with numbers escalating from 257,000 in 2015 to over 460,000 in 2019. With borders gradually reopening post-pandemic, this trend is anticipated to gather further momentum.
